Liver is the largest organ of human body. It performs many important and complicated functions of the body. It is an important part of the digestive system. The bile juice in liver helps in breaking down the food particles and produce the energy needed for other activities in the body. It also takes an active part in the production of proteins. Liver also helps in removing toxic products from the body cells and various bacteria to keep us healthy. Any problem in the liver can potentially disturb all these functions and may cause a life-threatening situation. Some problems of liver can be cured by medications but when the liver cells are no longer functional then the liver transplant surgery is necessary.

Liver transplant surgery is not a very casual thing. It includes many complications before and after the surgery. To do the surgery there must be a donor liver which can be collected from a living person or a dead person. In case of dead person the liver needs to be collected within 3 hours of death. Liver has a unique property of regeneration of the cells. Therefore, a lobe of the liver is enough during the transplant surgery. Before the surgery a number of tests are done to check the matching of the donor and recipient which is a very important step for the surgery. If the two does not match then there will be a huge problem after surgery. The common complications that may occur after surgery are infection, bleeding, rejection, and biliary dysfunction etc. In rare cases the patient may also be dead. Doctors like Dr Mohamed Rela make the impossible things possible. He is a well-known surgeon in the department of liver transplant. He can almost cure any type of liver disease including liver cancer.

The two most common complications that can occur after surgery are – Infection and Rejection of the organ. Both of the complications occur when the cells of the donor and the recipient do not match and there is any sterilization problem during the surgery.

Rejection of the organ: After the transplantation surgery sometimes the immune system recognizes the new liver as a foreign particle and attacks it. Our immune system tries to destroy the new liver as it cannot distinguish between the new liver and pathogens. It is called rejection. Doctors generally prescribe medicines for anti-rejection but in rare cases it does not work and the liver get attacked by the immune system.

Infection: Infections may occur due to unsterilized conditions during the surgery. As our internal body parts are very much sensitive they are at a high risk of getting infection. It can also occur as a side effect of the anti-rejection medicines. Infections can be cured by proper treatment if observed in an early stage.

If everything goes right the patient can go home in a week after the surgery. But the complicates may make it longer like 10 to 14 days. Though the complications can be cured by medicines one must follow all the things that doctor has suggested to recover fast.
